Master the content of your website and you can make a fortune! 🤑 It's not empty talk, it's real. Many web entrepreneurs have become rich thanks to a fundamental skill: Copywriting.

In this article, I look at the basics of copywriting and the SEO issues to write effective content for your website.

Fasten your seat belts, we're ready to take off! 🚀

Writing the content of your site: prioritizing copywriting or SEO?

Definition of copywriting

Copy what? Copywriting is The art of writing to persuade the reader. This discipline is at the crossroads of commercial writing, advertising, storytelling and SEO. When you want to sell online, copywriting is a key skill because it allows you to convert readers into customers.

Definition of SEO

The SEO (Search Engine Optimization)) or natural referencing, it is the art of optimizing a web page or a website for search engines. The objective is to bring qualified visitors to this website through a search on search engines. To achieve this, there are 4 fundamental pillars: technique, content, netlinking and user experience.

Two audiences to seduce: robots and your visitors

You write for two purposes: to appeal to search engine robots and to please your readers.

The robots that reference your website

To determine its ranking, search engine robots will analyze your site. There are a multitude of parameters to take into account. Some are explained to help you position your site well, others are not. Roughly speaking, robots will inspect elements concerning your legitimacy, the authority of your site, the authority of your site, mobile compatibility, user engagement, structured data, backlinks, loading speed, loading speed, content quality and the keywords used.

As you will have understood, to be well referenced you must pay particular attention to each of these aspects. Remember that content is a pillar of SEO. This means that you write to seduce search engine robots, because they are the ones who will give space to your site. If you write and no one reads you, it's not much use... We agree!

If you want to know more about these conditions, I invite you to find out directly at the source 😉 Google makes these documents available.

But beware, smart kids who would have fun bombarding their page with keywords! If the content doesn't make sense, your SEO will drop.

Visitors to your website: humans

Who is behind the screen reading your web pages? 👫 Humans! They are your customers. Finally, if you manage to transform them as such 😉

That's where copywriting comes in. If your website does not offer interesting content, your visitors will leave directly. If your website does not convince your visitors, you will not generate money by doing so... To avoid this situation, I recommend that you work hard on the copywriting of your site, because your site is a great opportunity to sell more.

In the end, there is no fight between copywriting and SEO. The one and the other go hand in hand, they are Complementary :

With a bad SEO, you will not get traffic to your website through a search engine search, so no one to convince.

With poor copywriting, you won't turn visitors to your website into customers, no matter how many they are.

On the other hand, good SEO will allow you to attract users to your website and good copywriting will allow you to convert them into customers.

So don't ignore SEO and even less copywriting! I say “even less” because remember, converting prospects into customers is still the ultimate goal.

So you have to mix copywriting and SEO! 🕺

Copywriting a Webflow landing page

You decided to build your site using the Webflow no-code tool. Bravo! How are you going to copywrite your pages? That's what we're going to see now! 👇

Know your target, their words and find your keywords

Before undertaking this writing work, you must ask yourself a fundamental question that will guide all of your writing: Who and to whom are you writing? It is by knowing your customer like the back of your hand that you will be able to write their language and know what words to use to convince them. In marketing, we recommend establishing a portrait of your target customer, who is called”persona.”

Let me give you some tips.

Precisely define your persona, the “robot portrait” of your prospect that will be used to visualize him: the more precise this persona is, the easier it will be to write for him. With the list below, you should not forget anything to build it:

  • social criteria: gender, age, household size
  • geographical criteria: country, region, department, department, municipality, municipality, size of municipality, climate, type of housing
  • demographic and economic criteria: level of education, profession, socio-professional category (CSP)
  • psychographic criteria: buying behaviors, lifestyles, values, beliefs, personality...

At this stage your persona is already very specific, but we can go even further 😉 If you want to write the best offer with the words of your target, the secret (well, who's not one) is stalking! 💡

For example, go to Facebook, to a competitor's page. Consult and analyze the comments left under the posts: the words used, the tone, the emojis, the obstacles to buying, the thanks, the people tagged ... Also, don't forget to click on the profiles, you will discover other valuable information, which will be used to enrich your persona. You can of course continue the investigation on Instagram, Linkedin...

If you saw a “Someone saw your profile” notification on LinkedIn, know that it was me. 🕵🏼♀️

Copywriting structures to convince

It exists several structures to help you format your content to make it persuasive. Follow the guide, here are 3 of them!

AIDA

It is the most well known structure in copywriting. The four letters indicate an order in how to present the offer. It works as follows:

Attention: This first part is about getting your reader's attention. It's about hooking it up, nothing more and nothing less 😏 You can do it with a shocking title, a shocking image, a shocking promise.

Interest : Now that you've hooked the fish (in a good sense of the word huh, I like salmon 🍣), you need to arouse his interest in reading on. Here, you have to show him that you know him, that you are talking to HIM and that you have a solution to offer him.

Desire : It is during this phase that you seduce your reader. As he reads to you, he should consider his life with you. I am calming down. Let's say he has to consider your solution and say to himself, “What if it was for me?”

Action : This is your conclusion! Know that at the end of your pitch, if you don't tell your prospect to take action explicitly, they won't. That's how it is, we are waiting for orders 😅

NOT

This framework focuses on three aspects:

Problem : Here, you will need to speak directly to the target of the problem you have identified. We are not wasting time, the person concerned must recognize himself in this problem. This is what invites him to continue reading.

Agitation of the problem : The purpose of this part is to put the reader in an emotional state of turmoil to push them to act. Because yes, emotions have the biggest part in our decision-making... During this phase, you need to press on the problem, wiggle the knife in the wound.

Solution : Phew, there is a solution to end this suffering! This is the idea you need to communicate when presenting your offer. Don't forget to add your call to action to end your demo 😉

DAD

Last structure we are looking at in this article! It is a copywriting structure that is structured as follows:

Problem : You are starting to get used to it, in this part you start with the problem of your target 😥

Benefits : Here, you appeal to your reader's imagination by offering them a bright future, free of this problem.

Proofs : Make way for the rational! In this block, you must provide evidence to your reader so that they take you seriously, as a trustworthy interlocutor. It's time to share your offer, your customer testimonials and any element of reinsurance.

Action : As with the other two structures, make it clear what your reader should do 😊
